Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes have a particularly good relationship, not only because both come from Portugal, but also because both come from Portugal.

Bruno Fernandes’ role at Manchester United is now at stake. In both the English and Portuguese press, the news is repeated that the captain could leave Old Trafford. Compatriot Rúben Amorim’s abrupt departure as manager has put a question mark over Fernandes’ continued future at the club.
According to sources close to the player, he is frustrated with the development at Manchester United and does not see the sporting progress he hoped for. This frustration could be decisive for his decision to leave the club at the end of the season.
It is worth remembering that Bruno Fernandes already received three concrete offers from Saudi Arabian clubs at the start of the season – Al Hilal, Al Nassr and Al Ittihad. Despite the fact that the offers could have earned him an income of close to 200 million euros, the Portuguese international chose to turn them down at the time. Now the situation may look different.
Teammates of Bruno Fernandes believe the playmaker will leave Manchester United next summer, and have outlined the frustrating reasons why.

In a time of decline and gloom at Manchester United, there has been one bright spot throughout the 2020s. Bruno Fernandes has been and continues to be United’s most effective player in a period where the club cannot take a step forward without taking two back.
Fernandes previously rejected the possibility of moving to Saudi Arabia in favor of remaining loyal to Manchester United. That was despite Fernandes’ subsequent claims that certain people at Old Trafford wanted to get rid of the Portuguese.
Fabrizio Romano has repeatedly stated that Fernandes will consider his future at Man Utd after the 2026 World Cup.
And according to the latest information from Sky Sports, the expectation from the close Fernandes in the dressing room is that the 31-year-old is finally ready to leave Man Utd and move on to bigger and better things.
When they explained why, it was claimed that those close to the player “fear” that he “has had enough” of the constant “turmoil” that the club finds itself in.
Fernandes had a good relationship with Rúben Amorim, who has since been sacked. Amorim played an underrated role in convincing Fernandes to stay when the £100 million offer from Al-Hilal came.
United regularly miss out on Champions League football these days, while claims that United executives wanted to sell Fernandes behind his back were also cited as a problem he hasn’t gotten over.
A source said: “Some in the squad think Bruno has had enough, and to be honest, they don’t blame him.
“He always gives 100 percent and has been the club’s best player since he arrived.
“But they believe that he feels let down under the new ownership model, and that Amorim’s departure has not helped. He is not a likely candidate for a big-money transfer to Saudi Arabia because he is a football purist.
“But no one can doubt that from the moment he signed for Manchester United, he has given everything.
“Nobody wants him to leave—but his teammates would understand if he did.”
Where will be the next stop for Bruno Fernandes?
Manchester United have big plans for their midfield.
United are ideally hoping to sign ALL THREE of Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton over the next two or three transfer windows.
Naturally, such big signings will coincide with the departures of big names, and Fletcher was informed that it is entirely possible that Fernandes is part of the clean-up.
Fernandes remains a main target for the Saudi Pro League, but a move to another major European league is just as likely.
Fernandes’ current contract at Manchester United includes a buyout clause that non-Premier League clubs can trigger. The value of the clause is £56.6 million.
Speaking to Canal11 in late 2025, Fernandes gave an insight into where he wants to go when he leaves Man Utd.
He said: “I want to stay at Manchester United for as long as I feel wanted. I would like to experience the Spanish league and fight for big titles in Italy. I have many connections to Italy… My daughter was born there.
“I’ve already thought about returning to Portugal… the first choice would be Sporting [Lisbon]. To be happy, as it was with Sporting. But I don’t want to spoil the picture that was left behind.
“But I don’t want to drag myself there, I want to contribute to it. And even try district football, at an advanced age. You play in the district for love, you feel different. I have friends in the territory.”
In other news, Fabrizio Romano expects Man Utd to be “serious candidates at the table” for Elliot Anderson in 2026, as they look to revamp their engine under whoever their next permanent manager is at Old Trafford.
Otherwise, United have been warned that any potential new manager is likely to be deterred by the way the club has been run since Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge, after Alan Shearer listed a catalogue of mistakes committed by the British billionaire, while sources have revealed a major double update on the club’s plans to hire an interim manager.
