Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez wants to stick to his original plan of returning to club football in 2026.
The midfield legend has been out of football since leaving Barcelona in May 2024 after a controversial end to his time as manager. Xavi led Barcelona to the La Liga title in his first full season (2022/23), but the last few months in Catalonia were marked by negativity.

The 45-year-old has expressed a desire for a new coaching assignment, but still carries frustration over the finish in Barcelona.
“No rush, but I want a good project”
“There is no rush on my part, but I want a good project. Something like: “You have four years to build something”. I would like to work in the Premier League – I love the passion there,” he said in an interview with The Athletic.
“In Spain, everything is too much about results.
“I’m ready to ‘suffer’ again, but I don’t think I will suffer more than I did in Barcelona. It was too emotional for me, since I’m also a supporter.
Premier League on the horizon Xavi’s
comments about the Premier League have only fuelled rumours that he could aim for England – with the possibility of succeeding Pep Guardiola (in 2027) if he waits until then.
Manchester United and Arsenal could be potential options, especially if the latter were to sack Mikel Arteta after missing trophies in 2026.
Rejects surprise offer from India
The Indian national team is looking for a new coach after Manolo Márquez left his job to focus on club work in Goa.
Xavi’s name was suggested as a candidate, but sources close to Diario Sport firmly deny this.
India’s sporting director Subrata Paul is rumoured to claim Xavi was interested, but this has been denied – both due to salary demands and the prioritisation of other candidates.
The plan stands firm: Club football in 2026
Despite rumours of an earlier return, Xavi’s social circle confirms that national team football is not an option. He is preparing for a new club job in two years, with English football as a clear goal.
