Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has broken his silence on the rumours linking Alexander Isak to a summer exit, with Liverpool on the horizon.
The Isaac saga takes shape
In what is shaping up to be the summer’s big transfer saga, Isak has reportedly decided to leave Newcastle – which has put Premier League champions Liverpool on alert.

Liverpool are reportedly preparing a British record bid for the Swedish international, for whom Newcastle are expected to demand at least £130 million (up to £150 million).
Isak was left out of Newcastle’s squad for the Asia tour due to a thigh injury, but rumours of his desire to leave the club surfaced just hours later.
Howe confirms backroom activity
On Saturday, Howe spoke before Sunday’s friendly against Arsenal, and was naturally asked about Isak’s future:
“He’s very popular in the dressing room. We would like him to continue his journey at Newcastle,” Howe told reporters.
“Things are happening in the background. Conversations take place between Alex, myself and the club. These will remain private.
“Regardless of the outcome, it must be in the best interests of the club. There are no contract negotiations taking place at this time. That may come later. I sincerely hope he stays. But in football, who knows what the future holds?
Isak’s impressive stats
Isak has grown stronger in the Premier League since his arrival in 2022, with 23 league goals in the 2024/25 season after 21 goals the year before. The former Real Sociedad striker has scored 73 goals in 109 appearances (62 goals, 11 assists), including Newcastle’s second goal in the League Cup final win over new Liverpool manager Arne Slot last season.
Competition for Isak?
Although the news of Isak’s availability would normally arouse interest from several clubs, Liverpool could actually be left without real competition:
- Arsenal are about to sign Viktor Gyökeres
- Chelsea have already signed Liam Delap and João Pedro
- Manchester United have spent over £130 million on Cunha and Mbeumo
- Barcelona happy with Lewandowski
A Saudi Arabian club is reportedly preparing a £130 million bid, but Isak has no interest in a Saudi adventure and prefers Liverpool.
