This is the week of action at one of Germany’s oldest clubs. Werder Bremen closes his x-account and moves to BlueSky, Elon Musk’s run on former twitter is not sustainable. Naby Keita’s behaviour in the Werder shirt has also prompted the club to act.

First to Musk. On Monday, Klaus Filbry, chairman of the club, announced his resignation from the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Since Elon Musk took over the platform, hate speech, hatred of minorities, right-wing extremist posts and conspiracy theories have increased at an incredible rate under the pretext of freedom of expression. The radicalization of the platform is driven by Elon Musk, the club adds, writes Werder Bremen in a statement.

Werder Bremen became active on Twitter in 2008. Now the club hopes that the over 600,000 will join BlueSky, a new service with many of X’s features.

St. Pauli has already “announced a transfer” to BlueSky and warmly welcomed Werder Bremen in a post. The British newspaper The Guardian left X earlier this autumn. The newspaper’s justification was “disturbing content” such as “right-wing conspiracy theories and racism”. Elon Musk responded to the announcement from the newspaper by saying that “they are irrelevant”.

Now to the sporting part and Naby Keita. Since his exit from Liverpool in the summer of 2023 and his signing with Werder Bremen, he has played 107 minutes on the pitch. The last time Keita was in the Werder squad was at the beginning of April. There are of course two sides to this story, Werder Bremen justifies that Keita has played his last game for the club, with:

“Any person who does not board the Werder team bus with their teammates will no longer wear the Werder shirt at the Weser Stadium,” he says.

The contract runs until the summer of 2026, so this will be a job for the lawyers.
