Virgil van Dijk has in recent months professionally steered clear of questions about whether he will leave Liverpool with the answer that “full focus is on….” After the win against Real Madrid, the Dutchman had clearly lowered his guard. Then a Spanish journalist fired off questions that made Van Dijk move away from the standard answer.

A journalist from El Chiringquito asked the Liverpool star directly if he plans to leave Liverpool.

“Wow, what a direct question. Don’t ask me that directly [in England],” Van Dijk joked.

“At the moment, there is nothing I can say. The only thing I can say is that I’m fully focused on [Liverpool’s next game against] Man City.”

The journalist then replied: “Real Madrid need defenders. Alaba, Militao are all injured.”

The Spanish journalist then continued, adding: “Maybe you’re going to Real Madrid?”

Van Dijk replied: “When?”, the journalist said: “in the summer”.

Van Dijk: “Wow. I don’t know, the main focus for me is to face Man City.”

Real Madrid supporters immediately took this as a “this happens” response, while Liverpool supporters suddenly imagine the Liverpool captain slipping away at the end of the season.
