Swedish star Viktor Gyökeres is one of the best performing strikers in football today, with 26 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions. He is naturally on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
His team Sporting have had a clear decline in performance after Manchester United bought out their manager Ruben Amorims. Yesterday, however, they were back on the winning track where Viktor Gyökeres opened the ball in Saturday’s 3 – 2 win at the Estádio José Alvalade over Boavista.
El Nacional reports that this has made the Swedish striker rethink his future. The outlet reports that Barcelona appears as one of the clubs interested in Viktor Gyökeres” and they feel that “the striker has qualities that make him an ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who is already 36 years old and whose presence in Barça’s attack seems to be coming to an end.”
Becoming the “new Lewandowski” would be amazing for someone who has admired the Polish superstar all his life. We in Norway like to compare Viktor Gyokeres with Erling Braut Haaland, while his old boss makes comparisons with Danish Rasmus Højlund.
It comes after former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has hinted that his former club should rely on Rasmus Hojlund rather than Viktor Gyökeres.
Viktor Gyökeres (26) has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford since the appointment of Ruben Amorim, but the Red Devils are expected to face significant competition for his signature from the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona.
The Swedish international has scored 34 goals in 29 appearances for the club and country so far this season, but he has only found the back of the net on one occasion since Amorim left Sporting in early November.
Meanwhile, Hojlund scored two late goals as Manchester United completed a comeback against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday night, and Hargreaves has hinted that the Dane could become Amorim’s very own Gyökeres at Old Trafford.
When asked if Hojlund is Amorim’s best centre-forward option at the moment, Hargreaves told TNT Sports (via The Evening Standard): “That’s for sure, I think he probably knew it before.
“Also [Viktor] Gyökeres is a very similar profile to Højlund in terms of physicality and size. He is a great athlete, Rasmus Høylund as well.
“Obviously, there are things both of us can work on, him and [Joshua] Zirkzee, but right now it’s Hojlund, it’s Amad [Diallo] and it’s Bruno [Fernandes], they’re the ones creating opportunities for Manchester United.
What has Ruben Amorim said?
In addition to Hargreaves’ comments, Amorim was also eager to praise Hojlund after the match against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday.
The Danish international has now recorded seven goals in all competitions so far this season, and the new Man Utd boss believes the 21-year-old has shown clear signs of improvement in recent weeks.
“He’s improving,” Amorim told reporters when asked about Hojlund after his Europa League double.
“I think he’s closer to the goal now. He knows better the movements he has to make. He could have scored more tonight, but he’s scoring, he’s working, he’s controlling the ball better, so he’s improving.
“The other guys are also there on the bench to change the game, and they did it.”
