Yesterday Real Madrid played 3 – 3 against Rayo Vallecano and thus there was room for capital rival Atletico Madrid to climb past them in the La Liga table.

As usual, manager Diego Simeone brings out Alexander Sørloth when things start to get tough, but seen with Norwegian objective eyes. (We know best) the 29-year-old Trønder should be used more. But it’s hard to argue with success, tonight came Atlético’s eleventh straight win in all competitions – the sixth in the league.

Barcelona still leads La Liga, but is now breathing seriously down the neck of Atletico Madrid

Alexsander Sørloth was substituted at half-time for Samuel Lino and 20 minutes before the end, the Trønder steered in the winning goal beautifully in the 1-0 win over Getafe.

It was the Norwegian’s seventh goal in La Liga this season.

The triumph also means that Atletico climbed past city rival Real Madrid in the table. Sørloth and co. are second behind Barcelona on goal difference. Barcelona will have one more game played when they face Leganés later on Sunday.

Sørloth was brought to Atletico from Villarreal for €32 million this summer. He has played a total of 24 games for the capital club, but only 11 of them have been from the start. He has struggled to gain the full trust of coach Diego Simeone.

Nevertheless, he has seven league goals. That’s just behind Real Madrid stars Vinicius Jr. (8) and Kylian Mbappé (9). Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski tops the table with 16 goals.

Lewandowski is also the only one to have scored more than Sørloth in the Spanish top division in the 2024 calendar year. Lewandowski has 27 goals, Sørloth has 24.
