Back in 2018, Liverpool signed a Dutchman who three years earlier had made his debut for the Dutch national team. Virgi van Dijk had shown some of his potential at Southampton for 80 games, at Liverpool the centre-back has played his way to world class. He is described as a player for Liverpool with the effect Rodri has at Manchester City. In the summer, it may be over, but now the 33-year-old is sending a strong signal that he wants more in red.

The Dutchman has passed 33 and is thus categorically placed in “over peak age”. This affects negotiations with Liverpool and other clubs when it comes to contract length and terms. Van Dijk has kept quiet about the way forward, the only thing has been a grunt that “I have nothing to say, nothing new”.

Now the Liverpool captain lifts the rug a bit over the negotiations.

“I love the club, the club loves me. I love the fans, the fans love me. In my opinion, I can play for three or four more years, at least at the highest level. We’ll see what the future brings,” Van Dijk said in an interview with the Times.

Sounds like something has eased in the negotiations. This gives hope to the Liverpool supporters, who love their captain.
