When Nottingham Forest were promoted in 2022 under Steve Cooper, club owner Marinakis started signing at a wild pace. Chaos reigned on and off the match arena, but in the third season, the club is in a position that the supporters did not dare to dream of and no one else on the ball island thought would be possible. Now they are fighting for a Champions League ticket, where Forest have not been written off in the title race either. For Tom Cairney, it’s only a matter of time – before Forest hits the wall.
Fulham captain Cairney helped lead the club to victory against Nottingham Forest away from home in September, now the London club are ten points behind in the table. We sense a certain envy in Cairney for Forest’s strong position, but the captain has no faith that this will be enough for Nuno Santo and Forest.
When asked if Forest are part of the title race, the Fulham captain answers:
“I would say no, I can’t see them as a title candidate. I can’t do that. Half of the season is still left. They are last in the league in terms of possession.
“It’s unbelievable and it’s a bit against the odds, but I think they’re going to hit a wall at some point. I don’t know how quickly they’ll get over it, but I wouldn’t say they’re a title contender.
Anyone remember the phenomenon of Leicester with Claudio Ranieri and Jamie Vardy in the 2015/16 season? We wait to write off Nottingham Forest. Especially with the fox Nuno Santo at the helm – and Chris Wood in sparkling scoring form.
