Ralf Rangnick was a tragedy as a substitute at Manchester United, so it was surprising that the German coach was above average as manager of Austria.
For quite some time, it has been on the cards that German big club Borussia Dortmund were not happy with manager Nuri Sahin. After last week’s loss in the Champions League against Boligna and a position in the bottom half of the Bundesliga table, it was over.
Borussia Dortmund almost completely agreed with Erik ten Hag to take over, but the demands for wages and investment in players made a Dutch solution far too expensive.
Rangnick is more moderate in his demands. According to German Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg, Dortmund leaders Lars Ricken and Hans-Joachim Watzke had a secret meeting with Ralf Rangnick yesterday, Monday, in Salzburg.
The club’s ambition with the meeting was to investigate the possibility of Rangnick taking over here and now or when his contract with the Austrian Football Association expires in the summer.
Niko Kovac is another candidate and the former Bayern Munich manager is set to consider a six-month contract with an option for a further two years.
Dortmund are eleventh in the Bundesliga.
