Roy Keane. Uncompromising defensive midfielder. Extremely fierce with headless tackles, but also the perfect leader on the pitch for Alex Ferguson. The feud between striker icon Alan Ferguson and Keane was one of the biggest in Premier League history. The two players were at each other’s throats on the lawn, now the two guys are using their mouths to make their mark as football experts. When Mr. Shearer was asked who is the toughest Premier League player he has faced, it was not Mr. Keane who took the podium.
Sportbible directly asked the question: Who was the toughest to face, Keane or Duncan Ferguson?
-There is no doubt about it … ‘Big Dunc’, comes from Shearer.
Duncan Ferguson went to his football school in Scotland, before moving to Everton, then Newcastle with Alan Shearer, before returning to Everton until 2006. The Scotsman was notorious for his “head-butts”.
“Big Dunc is the toughest player I’ve faced – both to play against and with, I was lucky enough to play with him at Newcastle and stand next to him in the tunnel. He had such a presence that other teams were terrified of him,” Shearer continues.
-He was as tough as they get. Both on the field and off the field. He’s got this aura around him, right, you wouldn’t pressure him to ask him again – you’d just say “OK, no problem Dunc. As an opponent, you definitely don’t want to go into a fight with ‘Big Dunc’, that’s for sure,” Shearer reminisces.
Sorry, Keane, you weren’t the toughest in the class after all.
