The transfer window in the biggest leagues is closed and the calm has descended (a little). At Manchester United, Antony and Marcus Rashford found their way out to game time, 20-year-old Patrick Dorgu was tapped in as the new left-back at Old Trafford. For Alejandro Garnacho, it has been a hectic month. There was a very good reason why the 20-year-old was not sent out of the club.
Chelsea were active in securing the disgruntled winger with the Puskas Award on the shelf. Napoli reportedly made a formal bid for Garnacho, but both advances were stopped by Manchester United. According to the local newspaper Manchester Evening News, the United management was afraid that a Garnacho sale would create strong and negative reactions among the supporters. One of the newspaper’s sources described it as “no possibility to defend the sale of Garnacho as positive”.
It was reported in December that the United management was not seeking a sale of Garnacho, but was open to bids from £50 million. The sale of academy players is considered pure sales profit and important for meeting the rules for profitable and sustainable club operations.
Garnacho has 8 goals and 6 assists this season and has played an important role in the United attack. When the Argentine came off the bench in the Europa League match against FCSB, the 20-year-old pulled off a nice assist for Kobbie Mainoo. Against Liverpool, the winger was also involved.
After a run-in with Ruben Amorim, Garnacho has also played his way back into the starting eleven. United supporters should not have to experience that the management “empties the stock” of what actually works.
