Leicester. Premier League title. The Danish national team’s goalkeeper clip. Then nice, quick transfer to Anderlecht, before old coach Brendan Rodgers called and persuaded the veteran to move to Celtic. These are summaries of Schmeichel’s career. There is only one important detail that has been left out. Now Schmeichel talks about a done deal transfer in 2023 that not many people have noticed.
On Tuesday, Celtic will face Bayern Munich in the second Champions League match. This is the giant the 38-year-old was on his way to the airport to sign a contract with.
Manuel Neuer broke his leg at the end of 2022 after the World Cup fiasco in Qatar, Bayern needed a goalkeeper who could go straight in and deliver at the top level. Kasper Schmeichel was the chosen one.
“There was talk of me moving to Bayern Munich. Initially, everything was in a way agreed. I said: Send the contract. I don’t even need to know what’s in it, I would sign anyway,” Schmeichel begins, according to Bold.
“But in the end, it ‘fell to the ground’. I don’t know exactly what happened. You have to ask Bayern about that. Actually, I was on my way to the airport and ready to fly to Bayern, but I’m actually not 100 percent sure what went wrong in the end,” says a Schmeichel who would now rather stop Bayern Munich.
