24-year-old Angel Gomes has grown up since leaving Manchester United on a free transfer to Lille in 2020. By then, the player had worked his way up the academy since he was six, made his debut in the first team in 2017 and signed a professional contract. Then it said stop. Gomes never managed to play his way into regular playing time, but his development in Ligue 1 has been impressive. Now he is announced on his way back to the Premier League.
Making his debut for the England national team came in September last year, with his contract expiring in the summer, the attacking midfielder can negotiate with other clubs. Liverpool, Tottenham and West Ham have expressed their interest in addition to Manchester United.
There was some talk this summer of a move to United, but Angel’s style of play and temperament did not suit manager Erik ten Hag. Ruben Amorim, on the other hand, loves what he sees, and Transfermarkt has steadily increased Angel Gomes’ valuation since he left Old Trafford.
In September, Gomes, when asked if he would like to return to Old Trafford, stated with a “It will be difficult to say no..”.
According to TBR Football, Manchester United were in talks with Gomes’ representatives for the first time in December.
On Friday, transfer journalist Romano reported that Gomes will not extend his contract at Lille anyway and has signed with a new agency that will negotiate a big contract before next season.
Although it has been a few months since there was talk of a return to Old Trafford, Gomes has plenty of United supporters who want him back in the red shirt. When he also negotiates as a free agent, this is a great opportunity for financially hard-pressed United.
The next couple of months will determine where the next destination will be for the 24-year-old.
