Earlier this year, Ruben Amorim stated that Manchester United had to sell in order to sign new players. A completely new situation for one of the world’s biggest clubs, but with year in and year out with large deficits, it must be cleaned up. With ten Premier League games left in the season and with Amad Diallo out injured, United legend Gary Neville gives a reasonably gloomy status report.
Hojlund had two great opportunities against Arsenal, but went off the pitch for his 20th game in a row without scoring. Joshua Zirkzee hasn’t scored in the Premier League since December 1 against Everton. Against Arsenal, it was again captain Bruno Fernandes who had to make sure United scored, this time on a beautiful free-kick.
So what needs to happen in the summer transfer window? We’ll let Neville come up with his analysis.
“I think they will support him [Amorim],” Neville told Sky Sports after the Arsenal game.
“It’s a very bad team. Dryt has been recruited in recent years, but it must be torn up. The lack of pace in midfield, attacking and in the wing-back areas is unbelievable,” Neville said.
“Up front today they had [Joshua] Zirkzee, [Alejandro] Garnacho, who has a bit of speed, and [Christian] Eriksen. Last week it was [Rasmus] Højlund, Zirkzee and Eriksen. You’ve got Casemiro and [Bruno] Fernandes in midfield, who aren’t the fastest, and you’ve got two wing-backs [Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui] who are full-backs and can’t create anything at the top,” Neville continued. Before he takes the blame away from the coach:
-His [Amorim’s] attacking opportunities to score goals are absolutely non-existent.
If it’s up to Neville, it needs a total makeover this summer, where the focus must be on speed and finishing.
