“Some players are not good enough, and some of them are overpaid”. This was the start of Ratcliffe’s analysis of today’s Man United squad. He could have stopped there, but took just as well and hung out three players who have not been sent on loan. Ruben Amorim responds for the first time to the sensational statements of the United boss.
First to Ratcliffe’s statement: “If you look at the players we wanted to buy this summer but couldn’t buy, it’s because the club has bought Antony, Casemiro, Onana, Hojlund and Sancho. It’s things like that from the past, which whether we like it or not, are things the club inherits and are things we need to sort out.”
That is, Casemiro, Onana and Hojlund. Three players who fight every single week to regain their confidence. Before the Real Sociedad game, Amorim responds to this. The answer the Portuguese gives is what you want to hear from your coach in front of the microphone.
“If we all – including myself – are honest right now, we are underperforming this season. We always have the opportunity to change that,” Amorim begins.
Before he singles out Casemiro.
“You talk about players like Casemiro, for example, who have won everything, and we know that these types of players can play better. That’s what we’re focusing on and he (Ratcliffe) was honest about it. We focus on getting him and everyone else to change their minds,” Amorim said at the press conference.
Amorim could have “taken a Mourinho” and denigrated his own squad and individual players, but rather went on the defensive. United we are.
