– When the Serie A season is over at the end of May and his contract has expired at the end of June, 36-year-old Mats Hummels will retire.

When the centre-back last summer left Borussia Dortmund, his club since 2007, there were offers of extreme salaries on the table from Saudi Arabia, but Mats Hummels wanted to try out Italian football more than make a lot of money and chose Roma.

Mats Hummels says on social media: “I’ve come to the point no footballer can get away from. After 18 years and as much as football has given me”.

Hummels started in Bayern Munich’s youth academy, but it was at Borussia Dortmund that he made his breakthrough. He went there in 2009 and stayed there until 2016, when Bayern bought him back. In 2019, he went to Dortmund again. He did not renew his contract last summer and then signed for Roma.
