Jamie Vardy has apologised to Leicester City fans for the club’s relegation and referred to the 2024/25 season as being a “show”.

The Foxes’ immediate return to the Championship was confirmed after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at home at King Power to Premier League leaders Liverpool, thanks to a late goal from substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The defeat was Leicester’s 23rd of the Premier League season with five games remaining, increasing the pressure on manager Ruud van Nistelrooy. He took over from the sacked Steve Cooper in December, but hasn’t seen his team score at home at the King Power Stadium for over four months – an incredible run of nine games without scoring.

Supporters have protested against the club’s ownership group and sporting director Jon Rudkin, who they believe bears responsibility for Leicester’s failure. Vardy admitted on social media that the players have been far from good enough.

Vrady’s statement:
“Right now, I don’t even know what to say. No words can express my feelings of anger and sadness over how this season has unfolded. There are no excuses,” Vardy wrote. “As players and as a club, we have failed. There is no way to hide, and I refuse to entertain any thought of it.”

“After so many years at this club, we have experienced incredible highlights and successes – but this season has been nothing short of miserable and, for me personally, a total disgrace. It hurts, and I know you feel the same.”

“To all the fans: I’m sorry. Sorry we haven’t performed, and sorry we end the 2025 season with such a show.”

Vardy
was a key player in Leicester’s legendary Premier League triumph in 2015/16, scoring 24 goals as the club surprised giants Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea to win their first ever league title.

The 38-year-old has given Leicester 13 seasons of service, scoring 181 goals in the Premier League and Championship, and also tops the club’s goal tally this season with seven goals.
