The president of the Turkish club does not want to listen to that ear and has pointed to a clause that the Portuguese coach must honor.
The future of José Mourinho at Fenerbahçe continues to be a topic of debate in Turkey. Although the club has publicly expressed a desire to keep the Portuguese coach as head of the project, the possibility of an early departure exists. But it will not be an easy or financially beneficial decision for Mourinho himself.
Ali Koç, the president of the Turkish club, has been clear in explaining the coach’s contract situation: If he decides to leave the team early, he will have to give up a significant sum. Specifically, he will have to give up 10.5 million euros – the equivalent of a full year’s salary – which underlines the financial consequences of a possible break between the parties initiated by Mourinho.
Fenerbahçe want to keep Mourinho
Despite rumours linking him to the Portuguese national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Koç has stressed that he wants to continue with Mourinho:
“We want to keep Mourinho, but the final decision also depends on himself,” he stated. Furthermore, he revealed that during the season, the coach received an offer worth 36 million euros, but chose to stay.
Mourinho’s time in Istanbul has had varying success. Although the team is still fighting for the national title, early exits in the European Cups and the Turkish Cup have aroused skepticism. Now, with such a high clause at stake, the next step will depend solely on the so-called ‘Special One”s own will.
