According to a Spanish report, Xabi Alonso would love for Real Madrid to sign Pedri from Barcelona, while Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has given his assessment of the departing Bayer Leverkusen manager.

Alonso has announced that he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season. The former Real Madrid player, who led the German team to the Bundesliga title last season, will take over as Manger for Los Blancos, after Carlo Ancelotti leaves the Santiago Bernabéu.

Real Madrid have one of the strongest squads in the world, but a lack of progression in the Champions League quarter-finals and a loss in the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona have revealed some weaknesses.

Los Blancos could also lose their La Liga title to arch-rivals Barcelona, who are four points ahead of the table with only four league rounds remaining.

Defensa Central now claims that Alonso would like to sign one of Barcelona’s best players to Madrid.

Alonso “would like Pedri to play for Real Madrid”.

The departing Bayer striker believes that the Spanish international, given his profile, “would be a perfect fit for this team” and “would be an ideal reinforcement”.

Barcelona and Madrid are bitter rivals, and Alonso – who himself played for Los Blancos – is fully aware of this.

Therefore, the 43-year-old former Spain international knows “that it is close to impossible to sign Pedri”, even though the headline in the report claims that Alonso “wants to sign the Barcelona midfielder”.

Alonso understands that a transfer for Pedri from Barcelona “is not a feasible operation”, but perhaps the idea is to bring in a player with similar qualities to the 22-year-old Spain international.

Described as “a world-class player” by his Barcelona teammate Marc Casado, Pedri has scored six goals and provided seven assists in 55 appearances in all competitions for the Blaugrana this season.

Pep Guardiola’s comments on Alonso

In the same article, it is also mentioned that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has given his support to Alonso.

Guardiola said: “Xabi has already proven that he is an exceptional coach. He has a clear philosophy and what he has achieved with Leverkusen is impressive.”

With Alonso at the helm and possible new signings, it looks like Real Madrid are planning a major upheaval for next season. But a transfer for Pedri from Barcelona to Madrid is unlikely to be easy – even if Alonso wants to.
