It was a beautiful sight at Old Trafford last Thursday, when Ruben Amorim sat down on the bench at the end of a game for the first time since taking over as United manager. The United players controlled the game against Athletic Bilbao and did the job – without him shouting and gesturing along the sidelines. It was a similarly glaring sight to see the United players and Amorim thanking the supporters for their attendance on Sunday, after another Premier League defeat. United legend Teddy Sheringham has stated earlier this year that he believes Solskjaer will return one day as United manager, after following the Premier League season to Amorim, we understand Sheringham’s hopes of a return for “Ole”.
On Sunday, West Ham sent the United players off the pitch at Old Trafford with a bitter 0-2 defeat (and sent United down to 16th place). Three days after the same United team had played their way to advancing to the Europa League final. Ruben Amorim himself understands that another loss in the Premier League cannot be explained away with “focus on the Europa League”.

“For me, it doesn’t matter if we win the Europa League, because the problems are much bigger than that. The lack of energy, of intensity – those are the most dangerous things in this club. You can feel it from the first minute. Between our own field and the opponent’s field, there is a lack of commitment. That is something we have to change in this club. I am responsible for it. It’s something we have to work on. Both on and off the pitch. If we can’t do that, we have to make room for other people. All of them,” Amorim said after the game.
I am responsible for it. Must make room for others, if we can’t do it.
With the future already coming in four months with a new start to the season, United fans are starting to wonder how on earth this will be solved with Amorim football that has only had a positive effect in individual matches. This takes more than a summer vacation to fix.
Inspired by Teddy Sheringham’s “I’m sure Solskjaer will be very ready for a return to Old Trafford”, we end with some figures from Solskjaer’s stint as Manchester United manager until he was sacked in November 2021, with a run of one win in seven games in the Premier League, with the Red Devils seventh in the table.
-After 10 wins out of 13 in the Premier League and a comeback win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, he was rewarded with a three-year contract in 2019
-In his first full season as manager, Solskjaer led Man Utd to a third-place finish, securing UEFA Champions League qualification for the 2020/21 season
-United in second place in the Premier League in the 2020/21 season – 12 points behind champions Manchester City – the Red Devils lost the Europa League final to Villarreal on penalties
