Barcelona’s ability to sign Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford this summer could depend on whether they manage to sell Ansu Fati and that they can agree on a reduced wage.
Marcus Rashford was linked with Barcelona in the January window when it became clear that he could leave Manchester United, but a loan deal was too costly. Instead, he ended up on loan at Aston Villa, who have a £40 million option to buy.

Although Aston Villa have yet to make a final decision, there is speculation that Rashford will turn down a permanent offer from them in order to secure a move to Barcelona instead.
Agent connections can pave the way
Rashford has recently switched agents to Pini Zahavi, who has a close relationship with Barcelona president Joan Laporta. Fabrizio Romano reports that Barcelona are monitoring the situation closely, especially if Villa do not qualify for the Champions League and thus choose not to trigger the purchase clause.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who is also represented by Zahavi, is a well-known admirer of Rashford. The same goes for sporting director Deco, who appreciates Rashford’s versatility and willingness to play for the club.
Ansu Fati must first be sold
Barcelona had an interest in January, but lacked financial leeway because they were unable to sell Ansu Fati. The Spanish winger, who has only played less than 300 minutes this season, refused to leave the club in the middle of the season.
Now, however, Fati has opened up for a summer exit, having realized his low place in Flick’s hierarchy. If Barcelona find a buyer for him, they will be able to free up funds for a Rashford deal.
Pay cut needed
Rashford currently earns over £325,000 a week at United – a salary Barcelona can’t match. But several sources claim that he is willing to accept a significant salary cut in order to realize a dream transfer to Camp Nou.
The biggest challenge for Barcelona, however, could be to negotiate with United, who want a permanent deal and are likely to demand up to £60m if Villa do not exercise their option.
