It started as a funny story with two Hollywood buddies who bought themselves a Welsh club “in the middle of nowhere”, well placed in the amateur league. Three years later and three promotions in a row, has made Welcome to Wrexham something more than a curiosity. Now games await in the division just below the world’s toughest league. It will be rigged for further promotion.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Ryan Reynolds and his company are aiming for a fourth direct promotion. When Wrexham left the amateur league, there was a warning that now it will be tough. Direct promotion was the result. The same thing happened before League One. Now it’s going to be tough. Direct promotion was the result, so a repeat when the Championship ticket was secured. This time, there are fewer who warn that there will be a full stop for Wrexham, wisely enough.

So how will Wrexham face the competition in the second division? According to the English media, the Welsh club is now chasing experienced players who have been in the football war in the top two divisions. A strong candidate is Tom Cairney. The 34-year-old at Fulham (23 Premier League games this season) has been promoted from the Championship before, in July the midfielder is out of contract.

Cairney could still sign a one-year extension with Fulham, which could mean Wrexham will need to break their own transfer record – £2m for Sam Smith from Reading in January – to seal a deal. It looks set to be a busy transfer window for the ambitious Welsh club.

Cairney has a whopping 318 Championship games and 142 Premier League games to his name, a perfect type of manager for Wrexham in the face of the next level.
