A slightly complicated headline, but it is connected. Bayer Leverkusen had Cesc Fàbregas at the top of their lists, but when he got his “dream signing” to Como, he chose to stay and with that opened the door to Carlo Ancelotti’s son.
Rangers have had their strongest hint yet that Davide Ancelotti will take over Barry Ferguson’s place on the Ibrox bench, after a spectacular transfer worth €30 million.

Frustrating season for Rangers
The Gers have had a disappointing season where a strong Europa League performance was overshadowed by poor performances at home. Both Philippe Clement and interim manager Barry Ferguson have struggled to raise the team to the expected level, forcing the board to look for a new manager ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Ancelotti in the driver’s seat
Ancelotti appears to be the leading candidate, especially after the news of a €30 million transfer thousands of miles away.
Cesc Fàbregas paves the way for Ancelotti
One of the biggest threats to Rangers’ ability to secure Ancelotti – the son of the legendary Carlo and now coach of Real Madrid – was that he could be lured by the cash-strapped Serie A club Como.
Although Cesc Fàbregas has done a fantastic job in Italy, it seemed like he was ready to leave the club after becoming a strong candidate to replace Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso is expected to take over from Ancelotti senior at Real Madrid.
According to Sky Sport Italia, however, Fàbregas has turned down the opportunity at Bayer Leverkusen. Even if he does not get his contract extended – he is already tied to Como until 2028 – he will have expanded power in the transfer market. – The Bundesliga club, on the other hand, will, if we are to believe a united press, announce Erik ten Hag as the new manager.

Como shows confidence in Fàbregas
Fàbregas has already used his influence to secure a permanent transfer for Máximo Perrone from Manchester City worth €30 million, according to the Manchester Evening News. This deal shows Como’s confidence in Fàbregas, and the Spaniard reciprocates this by staying with the rapidly improving Serie A team.
Clear play for Rangers
Thus, it is unlikely that Ancelotti will choose Italy over Rangers, making it more likely that he will take his first head coaching job at Ibrox.
