The Swedish goal machine chose to stay at Sporting after their manager Ruben Amorim moved on to Old Trafford and Manchester United. – The 26-year-old striker has shown he not “only” scores goals in the Portuguese league, but also, with all ease, in the Champions League.

Now he has ensured Sporting’s victory in the Primeira Liga and qualification for next year’s Champions League tournament as well.

Sporting are league champions in Portugal, and they have Viktor Gyökeres to thank for that.
Fittingly, the Swede scored the last goal of the season when he made it 2-0 in the title match at home to Vitória Guimarães on Saturday night. It was the striker’s 53rd goal in 51 appearances in all competitions this season.

Gyökeres can now look back on a league season with a whopping 39 goals in 33 games, and he is leading the hunt for the Golden Boot – which is awarded to Europe’s highest scoring player – ahead of the likes of Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool).

After the game, the Swede was praised by his Danish teammate Conrad Harder:
“He’s fantastic. I’m trying to learn from him, and he’s had a fantastic season. He’s the best striker in the world,” Harder says to A Bola, according to Danish Tipsbladet.

Viktor Gyökeres secures Portuguese league title with decisive goal

Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres removed all uncertainty when he fired Sporting to league gold in Portugal. Before the last league round on 17 May, Sporting and Benfica were tied on points at the top of the table, but Sporting led on goal difference.

In the home game against Vitória, Gyökeres became the hero of the match when he made the final score 2-0 with his 39th goal of the season, scored just ten minutes before the end.

With this performance, Gyökeres naturally became the top scorer in the league for the second season in a row. No one has scored more goals in a season in the Portuguese top flight since the 2001/02 season, when Mário Jardel netted 42 times. The absolute record is still held by Argentine Héctor Yazalde with 46 goals from the 1973/74 season.

At the same time, Andreas Schjelderup and Benfica drew 1-1 away to Braga, which meant that they finished two points behind the league champions from Lisbon. Schjelderup played from the start in Braga, but was replaced by Angel Di Maria after just over an hour on the pitch. The Argentine world champion was instrumental in Benfica’s equalizing goal, which was scored by Vangelis Pavlidis.
