Jose Mourinho really is The Special One. No other coach in the football circus is like the Portuguese, neither on the sidelines nor at the press conferences, nor when he has to tell referees, coaches and opponents after the match what is “on his mind”. That Mourinho is one of the great coaches, there is no doubt about that either, even though the 60-year-old is now out of the five biggest leagues. For the past month, Mourinho has been heavily linked with an exit – to what is described as his “dream job”. Now the Fenerbahce coach confirms that there have been meetings.

The 60-year-old has regularly criticized the refereeing standard in Turkey. He was also sentenced to a three-match suspension last month for slapping the nose of Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk after a loss in the Turkish Cup. We’ve seen it before. When Mourinho lashes out at everything and everyone who trains, it is often nearing the end of the working relationship. It also didn’t help to lose to the “juvenile” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier in the month.

Turkish Haberturk claimed Mourinho’s Süper Lig stay is coming to a planned end. Journalist Ahmet Selim Kul reported Mourinho has reached an agreement with the Portuguese Football Federation to take over as national team coach after the 2026 World Cup at the latest.

Now Mourinho responds to the claim, denying that he has been in contact with his countrymen, but still has a surprise in store.

“I can deny that I have had meetings with the Portuguese Football Federation. I’m a loyal person,” Mourinho begins, according to TalkSport.

Okay, but Mourinho hasn’t been completely focused on his job at Fenerbahce. The Portuguese has been tempted to talk to another club.

“The only time I have been in direct contact with a club, I informed Fenerbahce. It was not now, but in January. I had a meeting with the club and did not accept the offer, but I already informed Fenerbahce before the meeting.

At that time, Mourinho had been working for seven or eight months at Fenerbahce. The club probably appreciates the coach’s “openness”, but hardly that Mourinho looked towards the exit door halfway through the season.
