Ange Postecoglou entered the scene as the Premier League’s best manager in the first months of the 2023/24 season. Although it wasn’t quite enough for a Champions League ticket in the Premier League, the Australian created enormous enthusiasm at the club and in the stands with his entertaining and effective attacking football. Then came the difficult second season, injuries, poor results, more injuries – and arguing with journalists at the press conferences. A few hours after Postecoglou led Spurs to their first title in 17 years, he talks about the important decision he made in January.

Because Tottenham sank down to the bottom of the Premier League and disappeared from the cups. What looked to be a catastrophically weak Premier League season had to be accepted. From January, the big plan was precisely what happened in Bilbao on Wednesday against Manchester United.

-For me, that’s always how it has worked well, when people support my vision. But within that, I think when we got to the end of January, the end of the transfer window, and assessed our situation, I just made a decision there and then that this was the trophy we were going to go for. And it was probably against what others at the club thought we should be doing at the time,” Postecoglou begins, according to Football-London.

-Again, it’s understandable, but I really thought we could win this. And everything we’ve done since then, everything we’ve done in terms of games, the teams I’ve picked has been about making sure that when those games came, the European games, that we’re in the best possible position to deal with them.”

-It has come with a price, for sure, in the league. And I have to take responsibility for that. I just felt that the final result of winning something was more important, and that was the only way I was going to do it,” says Europa League champion Postecoglou.
