Scott McTominay is now the clear favourite to be named Serie A Player of the Year.

The Scotland international had a sensational end to the season and played a crucial role in Napoli’s Scudetto triumph. His heroics, including the all-important opening goal in the final game of the season, secured Napoli their fourth Serie A title in the club’s history – ahead of reigning champions Inter.

Napoli won the Scudetto against all odds

Antonio Conte took over Napoli in the summer of 2023 with the aim of reviving an ageing squad that, after winning the Scudetto under Luciano Spalletti in 2023, had a disastrous 2023/24 season and finished 10th.

After losing star striker Victor Osimhen (on loan to Galatasaray) and then selling the club’s other superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (to PSG in January without a proper replacement), few gave Napoli any chance to fight for the title.

But with Antonio Conte on the sidelines, anything is possible. He has won league titles with Juventus, Chelsea and Inter – all in post-crisis periods – and has once again shown that he can exceed expectations.

McTominay – Naples’ unexpected hero

McTominay joined Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2023 for just €30.5 million and has been a revelation in Italy.

The Scottish midfielder scored 12 goals (all from open play) and provided 4 assists in 34 Serie A games. In total, he scored 13 goals across all competitions – making him the highest-scoring midfielder in Serie A. Only nine players (all forwards) scored more goals than him this season.

The 28-year-old formed a brilliant midfield trio with Stanislav Lobotka and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa – while Billy Gilmour also impressed in his subs. McTominay played as the most offensive of the trio and proved to be a constant goal threat with his runs into the box, clinical finishes and strength in the air.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the kilt becomes part of next year’s Napoli shirt.

From United contempt to Napoli’s god status

McTominay was already idolized at Napoli, but now he has achieved god-like status after helping the team to the Scudetto.

With his performances, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than McTominay being named Serie A Player of the Year. He had the good games, the impressive statistics, delivered when it mattered most – and now has the trophy to prove it.

In a season where few Serie A players really stood out, McTominay shone clearly brighter than most.

United’s big loss – Di Canio: “The directors should be arrested”

Premier League legend Paolo Di Canio stated earlier in the season that Manchester United’s directors should be arrested for selling McTominay.

“I would go to them at Manchester United and arrest all the directors – how on earth can you give McTominay away?” said Di Canio in October.

United have had a disastrous season without him. They are currently in 16th place in the Premier League and lost their last chance at the Champions League after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham – who themselves are in 17th place.

How they must not regret having sold McTominay now.

While United are wading in the mud far down the table, Napoli are celebrating the Scudetto – with McTominay as one of the main architects.
