Dirk Kuyt is wanted as a replacement for John Heitinga in Liverpool’s coaching staff.

According to reports, Liverpool are in the process of “preparing a return attempt” for a former club legend, as he is ready to leave his current club to replace someone who looks “likely” to leave Anfield this summer.

Liverpool just won the Premier League in Arne Slot’s first season. He worked wonders with a squad he largely inherited from Jürgen Klopp, with only minor changes, mainly off the pitch.

Along with bringing in his own coaching staff, Slot also brought John Heitinga to Anfield last summer.

But after just one year as an assistant at Liverpool, Ajax have approached him to persuade him to take over their head coaching role – a move that is described as “likely”.

As a result, Liverpool are already on the hunt for his replacement, and according to Football Insider, they are “preparing to bring in” former player Dirk Kuyt back to the club in this role.

Kuyt is set to leave Belgian club Beerschot this summer, and a return to Liverpool is mentioned as a “popular move”.

Kuyt’s career development

Kuyt played more games (285) for Liverpool than for any other club in his career. He was directly involved in 111 goals during his time at Anfield – including a hat-trick against rivals Manchester United – and won the League Cup there.

After retiring as a player in 2018, he has had several coaching roles.

Kuyt was an assistant coach for Quick Boys, then U19 coach for Feyenoord, before taking his first head coaching job at ADO Den Haag and then his current club, Beerschot.

In the 53 games he has been in charge of there, Kuyt has only scored 1.02 points per game, after his team finished bottom of the relegation round of the Belgian Pro League. Still, he is said to have impressed, which has led to Liverpool now considering him.
