Manchester City have reached an agreement with AC Milan that will allow the Italian club to receive a starting fee of €55 million, with the possibility of an increase of up to €70 million for Tijjani Reijnders.

There has been fierce competition for the Dutch international he is wanted by Manchester City by manager Pep Guardiola, partly because he is solid in several positions.

Reijnders has signed a contract until 2030 worth 8 million euros per season.

The midfielder confirmed the transfer after the Netherlands’ 2-0 win over Finland in World Cup qualifying on Saturday.

“I fly to Manchester on Sunday morning and come back to Zeist in the evening,” he told Dutch television.

Reijnders will conduct medical tests before the transfer becomes official.

Guardiola’s new midfield diamond

Pep Guardiola is a big admirer of the Dutch midfielder, who can play both as a traditional eight and in a deeper role. City are planning to invest heavily in midfield this summer, as they lose both Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gündogan when their contracts expire.

Reijnders’ impressive development

Reijnders joined Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 and quickly established himself as one of Serie A’s best midfielders.

In the 2024/25 season, he was arguably Milan’s best player, with 15 goals and five assists across all competitions. These numbers are particularly impressive when you consider that Milan had one of their worst seasons ever – they failed to qualify for European football and crashed out of the Champions League in the play-off round.

Key facts about the transfer:

  • Transfer fee: €55 million (+ bonuses up to €70 million)
  • Contract: 6 years (until 2030)
  • Salary: 8 million euros per year
  • Position: Midfield (number 8 or defensive)

Now it remains to be seen whether Reijnders can fill the void left by De Bruyne and Gündogan in City’s midfield.
