Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the arrival of Thomas Frank as their new manager, with the Dane taking over from Ange Postecoglou.
The former Brentford boss was quickly touted as a top candidate to replace Postecoglou after the Australian was sacked just two weeks after Spurs’ triumph in the Europa League.
Frank recently gave Tottenham his vote of confidence, while the club agreed to pay Brentford compensation of around £10 million, as the 51-year-old was under contract with the “Bees” for two more seasons.
Negotiations to bring Frank’s right-hand man, Justin Cochrane, to the club were the only things holding back a deal, but Tottenham managed to convince him to follow Frank to the other side of the capital.
Now, “The Lilywhites” have officially unveiled their new coaching staff, which consists of Frank, Cochrane and three other members of the support staff.
Frank has committed to Tottenham for the next three years until the summer of 2028, and he will also be accompanied in North London by Chris Haslam, Joe Newton and Andreas Georgson.
Haslam first joined Brentford in 2010 and held various positions related to physical development during his time at the club. Now he will be Spurs’ new “Head of Performance & First Team Assistant Coach”.
At the same time, the 29-year-old Newton will act as match analyst, while Georgson arrives after one season at Manchester United. Before that, he was also an assistant to Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.
Club statement
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Thomas Frank as our new head coach on a contract that runs until 2028,” Tottenham said in a statement.
“In Thomas, we get one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches in football. He has a proven ability to develop players and squads, and we look forward to him leading the team in preparation for the upcoming season.”
Frank’s legacy from Brentford
Frank leaves Brentford after leading the team in 317 games with 136 wins, 71 draws and 110 losses. He was the main architect of the club’s rise from the Championship to become an established Premier League team with European ambitions.
Frank’s first tasks at Tottenham
Before Frank can even start thinking about strengthening or refining the squad, his first task is to win the players on his side. Several of them are said to have been furious about the decision to sack Postecoglou.
Several of Spurs’ first-team players shared emotional tributes for the Australian, but Frank’s warm and approachable nature should make it easy for him to build a good relationship with his new squad.
After that, the Dane can turn his attention to a critical summer of transfer activity. According to rumours, he is determined to bring both Bryan Mbeumo and Nathan Collins to North London.
Collins’ arrival will be particularly useful if Cristian Romero can’t resist the temptation from Atletico Madrid. But with Champions League football back at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Frank may have a slightly easier job of convincing his key players to stay.
