Rayan Cherki has signed with Manchester City from Lyon and the next time it’s time for a city derby, the French international will be extremely motivated.
The France international signed for City for €36.5 million on June 10 and could make his debut in the club’s opening match of the Club World Cup against Wydad AC on Wednesday.

Turned down Manchester United for Manchester City
Cherki was heavily linked with several top European clubs before the City transfer, with Manchester United among those who followed him closely throughout last season.
The 21-year-old recorded 12 goals and 20 assists in 40 games in the 2024/25 season. City were keen to secure him as a long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, who has signed for Napoli on a free transfer.
Still stinging after Europa League defeat
Cherki excelled when Lyon faced United in the Europa League quarter-finals last year, scoring in both meetings. Still, Lyon crashed out after a late win from Harry Maguire.
Before the Club World Cup match, Cherki told reporters (via The Daily Mail):
- I didn’t like it when Manchester United won against Lyon, because I’m a real Lyonnais. Now I can’t wait to meet them to crush them. I just wanted to go to Manchester City.
Excited about Guardiola’s confidence
- When I talked to Pep and he wanted me, he was very clear. The system, the club and the city are perfect. I want to win, and City want to win everything. For me, it’s ideal.
- When you watch Rodri win the Ballon d’Or here, it’s clear that anything is possible with City. That’s why I’m here.
Wants to create its own history
- I’m not Kevin De Bruyne – he’s a club legend. I’m here to help the team. We have the best players in the world – I work and wait for my chance.
- Pep and I discussed my position and what I enjoy on the pitch. He loves a traditional 10, but I can play everywhere. The only thing I want is to play.
- Pep said: “When you have the ball, you are free” – it suits me perfectly, because creativity is my greatest strength.
