In the 2023/24 season, Ethan Wheatley was named United’s Young Player of the Year, but the 19-year-old has played in only 4 senior games so far. When Ruben Amorim took over the reins from Ten Hag, Wheatley disappeared on loan. This did not go as planned, but the striker has not given up, he will do everything to deliver first-team performances.
The striker, who had mostly enjoyed success in the youth teams (13 goals in 25 U21 appearances), took his first loan spell with Walsall in League Two. The club finished in fourth place, but the 19-year-old hopes Amorim didn’t make it this stay.

“My second half of the season has been frustrating. I haven’t really been able to show what I can do. Even though my loan didn’t go well – and it didn’t – I had in the back of my mind, and I told the staff at the club, that it shouldn’t define me as a player,” Wheatley told PA Sport.
Who has a clear plan to continue working to get a place at Amorim after the international gathering with England’s U19 team, where Wheatley scored in the 5-5 draw against Germany.
“Right now, I’m mostly focused on this tournament. But yes, since (Rúben Amorim) came in, I’ve been to the national team gathering, and I also went on loan in January, so I haven’t really been that close. But I want to be a Manchester United player in the future. If that doesn’t happen, then it probably wasn’t meant to be. We’ll just have to see what happens in the future,” says the 19-year-old.
