Argentine star Alejandro Garnacho has been told that it’s okay if he finds a new club this summer. “So it’s no wonder, even though Manchester United still pay him a salary every week, he’s more loyal to a clubmate who is also out in the cold and not the bosses who don’t want him at Old Trafford.

Alejandro Garnacho has shown his support for teammate Marcus Rashford (who dreams of Barcelona) by wearing an Aston Villa shirt on holiday, but his choice has sparked anger among a section of Manchester United’s supporters – including Mark Goldbridge.

The Argentine winger looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer after he was asked to find a new club by Ruben Amorim, who spoke to the first team just days after their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Garnacho, who was not in United’s squad for their last Premier League game against Aston Villa, nevertheless took part in the club’s controversial post-season tour of Asia.

But he is still expected to leave this summer, with several clubs interested in signing him – including Chelsea, Bayer Leverkusen, Atlético Madrid and perhaps the current favourites, Serie A champions Napoli.

Amid speculation about his future, Garnacho made the much-publicized choice to post a photo on Instagram of him wearing Aston Villa’s home shirt with “Rashford 9” on the back.

Marcus Rashford appreciated the support and replied: “My brother” followed by a heart emoji. But many United fans reacted negatively to the photo, including United Stand host Mark Goldbridge, who commented: “Completely disrespectful to all of us who have supported you, this is a huge insult to United fans.”

Goldbridge actually expressed his frustration with Garnacho’s choice to wear a Villa shirt on holiday when he spoke about the incident in a video on The United Stand’s YouTube channel.

“What he has done is effectively put on a rival club’s shirt, say ‘fuck you’ to all Manchester United fans, and at the same time – let’s call a spade a spade – this is disrespectful. He’s lowering his own market value to get the transition he wants,” Goldbridge said.

“He wants to play for Aston Villa, so he’s trying to lower his own value to get a transfer. He’s acting like a complete fool.”

Here’s how other fans on social media reacted to Garnacho’s post:

One user wrote: “He’s young and will make mistakes, but he needs to know that this is going to annoy people. This is unacceptable.”

Another said: “For those who don’t understand what’s wrong with this image: 1. You don’t wear the shirt of another Premier League club when you play for one. 2. You don’t put the name of a player who is currently in conflict with the club you play for.”

A third commented: “Honestly, wearing a Villa shirt while playing for United is absolutely unbelievable behaviour,” while a fourth said: “This tells you everything you need to know about how toxic Manchester United have become.”

A fifth added: “I don’t understand what he thinks this is good for. It only confirms United’s decision and can’t possibly look good for any interested clubs – even Aston Villa.”
