After the 2023/24 season, Jarrad Branthwaite was so closely linked to Manchester United that supporters had almost taken it for granted that the centre-back rock would pull on the red shirt. Everton refused to back down in the negotiations, demanding that United would “bleed” financially if they were to snatch their biggest asset. Bids came, bids were rejected. With new Everton owners and David Moyes at the helm, the 22-year-old has realized where the “fun” happens for him over the next five years.

In 2024, the Manchester Evening News reported two bids from United for Branthwaite, the highest at around £50 million. Everton listed around £30 million as the highest bidder. United withdrew, after a horribly poor Premier League season last season and missing out on a Champions League ticket after losing the final in the Europa League, the Red Devils have withdrawn. On Tuesday, the confirmation came that the centre-back on the England national team has made his long-term choice.

It is to great applause among Everton supporters that Branthwaite signed a new contract, running until 2030. Now the 22-year-old will form a defensive tribe consisting of national team goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, Branthwaite and James Tarkowski – at his new home arena.

Manchester United must realise they have lost the battle for one of England’s most promising centre-backs.
