Swedish goal machine Viktor Gyökeres is said to have decided not to sign for Manchester United after witnessing how manager Ruben Amorim treated a player at Old Trafford.

Gyökeres’ impressive success is creating a lot of demand.

Gyökeres has been one of the hottest transfer names of the summer after a wild scoring pace:

  • 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting CP last season
  • 43 goals in his debut season in Portugal

Arsenal seem to be leading the race for his signature, while Manchester United and Juventus have also shown interest.

Amorim’s treatment of Lindelöf was the turning point

According to the Portuguese Record, Gyökeres was deeply affected by how Amorim “wasted” his Swedish compatriot Victor Lindelöf. Both players share the same agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, who was reportedly also furious about the situation.

Lindelöf, who just left United after making 284 appearances for the club, made just 25 appearances last year – the lowest number since joining from Benfica in 2017.

Role of the agent

Cetinkaya reportedly persuaded Gyökeres to work under Amorim when he signed for Sporting from Coventry in 2023. Now it seems that this story has taken on a bitter aftertaste.

Key Points:

  • Gyökeres turned down United due to treatment of Lindelöf
  • Shared agent created extra tension in the situation
  • Arsenal now favourites to sign Swedish goal machine
  • Amorim loses the opportunity to reunite with his former striker

What now?
With United’s search for a new striker still underway, Amorim will now have to find alternatives – while Gyökeres seems to have headed for London instead of Manchester.
