Although Liverpool have spent big money on signing under Jürgen Klopp, the club still has a reputation that shines “building stone by stone, while keeping the store under control”. It has therefore created a lot of attention when Liverpool this summer pull up several hundred million euros in signings – and still have a giant signing on the block.

“This is not something that just happens, it has been in development for several years,” Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan told The Athletic.

That is, 307 million euros divided between the signing of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Miloš Kerkez is completely according to plan.

“One of the things we are constantly focusing on is the ‘positive circle’,” Hogan continues, referring to the focus on generating revenue.

“We also recognise, having won the English league title for the 20th time, that this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We want to make sure that we act like one.

Hogan explains the summer’s big spending with Liverpool’s handling of several previous transfer windows:

“It’s wrong when you only look at one summer. It probably distorts the information. There were many last summer who thought that we did not spend enough money. If you just look at this summer, it can stand out in terms of the total investment.

According to the English media, Liverpool will have to sell a number of players in the coming time to get the numbers on the revenue side up in the “positive circle”.

But this may be far from over. Transfer journalist Romano reported on Thursday that Alexander Isak has informed Newcastle management that he will seek a transfer to another club this summer. Earlier this month, The Times reported Liverpool had signalled they were ready to bid £130 million for Isak.

If Liverpool can speed up the sale of players to refuel the “virtuous circle”, we cannot ignore the fact that Liverpool will start the season with Alexander Isak also in the squad. Or as Hogan so elegantly put it: “We want to make sure we behave like one of the biggest clubs in the world”.
