Iga Swiatek and Magda Linette met in the 1/8 finals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. Although expected to be a fierce duel, the match was a harsh tennis lesson for Magda Linette. The Pole won the first game of the match only when the score was 0:5 in the first set.
Fratricidal duels between Polish male and female tennis players are extremely rare. This is best evidenced by the fact that Iga Swiatek’s match with Magda Linette was only the eighth match between Polish women’s tennis players in history. The fans expected a fierce duel due to the form of Magda Linette, who has her best personal results this season, both in the Grand Slam and in the ranking. However, reality quickly verified their enthusiasm.
Iga Swiatek confidently won her first two matches in the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. It was the same in the match against Magda Linette. Swiatek, nine years younger than her, defeated 31-year-old Linette in two sets. Swiatek gave Linette only two games. The older Polish player recorded her first game only when the score was 0:5 in the first set. Swiatek dominated the first set, although her first serve efficiency was very low – only 33 percent. However, she made fewer mistakes than Linette and recorded more winners. In the second set of the match, Swiatek gained even more strength. After 11 minutes she was leading 3-0, and in the 66th minute of the match she finally ended the match with a score of 6-1, 6-1.
In the quarterfinals, Swiatek will play against the winner of the match between Anhelina Kalinina and Caroline Garcia, who will face each other on Thursday morning Polish time.
