Forgotten was the massive downturn when Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu brought in David Raya in the summer of 2023 – without giving Aaron Ramsdale a heads up. This after the Englishman had had a sparkling good season for Arsenal. Dad Ramsdale has since told how hard this was for his son. This season, Aaron Ramsdale was set to rise on loan to Newcastle. Here, too, the English goalkeeper will not be able to establish himself as the first goalkeeper.

Southampton signed Ramsdale for around £25 million from Arsenal in August 2024 on a four-year contract, delivered good performances at the Saiints, but could not save the club’s relegation from the Premier League. Championship games were out of the question for the England international goalkeeper, this season Newcastle have hired Ramsdale to give Nick Pope competition for the first goalkeeper spot.

Pope has been Howe’s first choice in the Premier League, while Ramsdale has primarily featured in cup games during the season. Against Manchester United on Wednesday, Ramsdale was suddenly preferred to Pope, and it was reportedly because the Newcastle coach wanted to send a signal to Pope.

According to The Athletic , Eddie Howe is not convinced by either Nick Pope or Aaron Ramsdale’s qualities. The English media claim the St. James’ Park gang has already decided not to exercise the purchase option on Ramsdale, and sends the 27-year-old back to Southampton in the second division after the season. The money will instead be invested in a new, permanent first goalkeeper, it is reported.
