Last week, the TV images from the game against Ipswich showed a very cranky Alejandro Garnacho, who was substituted after Patrick Dorgus’ red card. Youthful temperament and easy to defend as a coach? Not when the sulking continues the following week.
The Manchester United players are of course frustrated after a season that cannot be saved, and surely believe they themselves are the player who represents part of the solution. When Garnacho grumpily walked into the dressing room during the Ipswich match, while the rest of his teammates were part of what unfolded in the Premier League arena (3-2 win), he also showed that he could not handle the “criticism” of being taken off the pitch.
Against Real Sociedad on Thursday, Amorim took out Garnacho in the 78th minute, replaced by Eriksen. United legend Paul Scholes understands why Amorim took the 20-year-old out.
-He looked like he sulked a bit to me… Garnacho’s greatest strength is running through. Sometimes he makes the wrong decisions, but he had a lack of energy and was a bit whiny. He needs to get better, as they don’t really have anyone else to call on,” Scholes told TNT Sports.
Former United player Mikael Silvestre thought Roy Keane would be just what United’s younger players needed. The “players of the day” who struggle to deal with criticism would benefit from having a Keane behind the scenes who hardens the players to think only the best for the United team.
Having followed a player like Garnacho with his great potential, but also great limitations as a type, we agree with Silvestre. Someone needs to remind the younger stars why they are allowed to wear the United shirt.
It’s not because of the £50,000 weekly wage, nor because of 12 million followers on Instagram.
Still, maybe drastically to bring in grinning Keane?
