You can’t defend your way to victories in football. For Atlanta United with Ronny Deila hovering along the sidelines, it has been a particularly tough period in MLS. On Sunday night, the redeeming goal finally came.

It’s like a ghost hanging over you when an attacking player stops scoring, or worse, an entire team goes into a goal drought. In April, Deila has led the club to a 0-1 loss, 3-0 loss, then a 3-0 loss against Orlando City. On Saturday, Nashville came to Atlanta with the goal of sending Atlanta further into the goal drought desert.

Twenty minutes into the game, former Newcastle star Miguel Almirón finally managed to send his team into goal celebration with a 1-0 score. You could see the reaction from players, supporters – and not least Ronny Deila – what this meant. This was the first Atlanta goal in 360 minutes of play!

Unfortunately, it was not three points, Nashville equalized to 1-1 after 66 minutes, but Deila’s football again showed it can produce a goal. This will be followed up against the Chicago Fire this coming Saturday, here Deila will meet the former Bodø/Glimt star who has continued with what he does best – scoring and delivering assists.
