Gael Monfils wins the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm after an almost two-year break since winning his last trophy. This is the 12th title in the Frenchman’s career and probably one of the ones that he will enjoy the most. The road to this victory was extremely bumpy for the Frenchman.
When Gael Monfils won the tournament in Adelaide at the beginning of last year, he was among the second ten best tennis players in the world. Unfortunately, a few months later he suffered an injury that excluded him from the game for many months and completely stopped his career. The Frenchman returned only in March this year, and although he is already old for a tennis player, he announces that he wants to take part in the Olympics in Paris in 2024. Reading this, some of you probably think that after such a long break, Monfils has no chance of a good result at the Olympics. However, this tennis player has already proven to the public that they are wrong so many times by writing him off that I do not make any judgments. However, I am sure that Monfils has not said the last word yet, which is best confirmed by his ATP win in Stockholm.
Monfils became the oldest winner of the event in Stockholm. He also became the fourth tennis player in history to play in at least one ATP tournament final for 19 consecutive years. Before him, only Jimmy Connors, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer had achieved this feat.
Monfils has just equalized the achievement of the first two. He misses Federer’s record by reaching the finals in one of next year’s tournaments.
