On Saturday, the debut for Albert Grønbæk finally came. The former Bodø/Glimt player is in what he describes as the toughest year of his career.

After the Bodø/Glimt exit in 2024, Grønbæk has gone from Ligue 1 (Rennes), to the Premier League (Southampton), to Serie A (Genoa) without establishing himself. When it became known in February that the Dane was on his way to Hamburger SV and the Bundesliga, this was described as a smart choice.

In the Viaplay program “Immigration Service”, Mikkel Beckmann pointed out that the Bundesliga immediately seems like a reasonable destination for the former Bodø/Glimt profile.

“French football didn’t suit him, we quickly found out when he came to Rennes. Italian football didn’t suit him at all. But German football, I actually think it fits very well with the style he has, with being very, very good in the transition game and having a lot of power and running capacity. That would be a big change,” Beckmann said of the transfer in February.

More than two months after signing with Hamburger Sportsverein, Grønbæk is finally on the field. A hamstring injury, flu and lack of match fitness have kept the 24-year-old out.

With just over 20 minutes left of the game against Augsburg (1-1), the Dane came on the pitch and finally got to show himself to the HSV supporters.

After the 1-1 draw, the local media Hamburger Morgenpost asked if he was chasing a starting spot on Merlin Polzin’s team.

“I’m a player who needs more stability. One thing at a time. I came in and played 20 minutes. It was good, a nice feeling, because I haven’t played football since December. That’s a long time. I think maybe the last year has been the worst of my career,” says Grønbæk.

Since this summer, Grønbæk on loan to Genoa and now Hamburger SV has a total of 249 minutes in the match arena. Now the Dane will convince the Bundesliga club that he is worth the €5 million purchase option. Bundesliga should suit the former Glimt profile, now it is for Grønbæk to step on the gas.
