In December/January, Alexander Sørloth was strongly linked to exit Atletico Madrid. Ståle Solbakken reminded his national team striker he needed 90 minutes of games in the run-up to the World Cup finals this summer, coach Diego Simeone gave one of his top scorers last season little confidence. Then Sørloth scored in a row for Atletico, exit Madrid was no longer an issue. What happens after the summer is not something that is urgent for Sørloth, but it is of course interesting to follow the activity of Atletico in a striker position towards the coming season.

Sørloth’s contract at Atletico Madrid runs until 2028, now it is reported that “our man” could face competition for playing time from one of the world’s best strikers.

On Thursday evening, it was really boiling in Madrid. Atletico waltzed over Barcelona 4-0 in the Copa del Rey’s first semi-final match, Sørloth was 22 minutes on the pitch, but “left the scoring to others. Robert Lewandowski was on the pitch for Barcelona for around fifty minutes, but was unable to deliver a goal for his employer Barca. Now there are reports of a potentially sensational transfer, with Lew standing on Sørloth’s side of the midfield next season.

Lewandowski continues to deliver (114 goals in 176 games), thrives at Barcelona, but is on an expiring contract, with Spanish media reporting a likely exit.

In the past, there have been reports of both Saudi Arabia and MLS, where the Chicago Fire have reportedly put a contract on the table, and AC Milan have also signed up to secure one of the sharpest strikers in history. According to Mundo Deportivo , Atletico Madrid have jumped on the bandwagon, signalling “serious” interest in signing Lewandoski.

Atletico tested this concept with Luis Suarez, when the goal machine was pushed out by Barcelona, directly donned the Atletico shirt and scored the Barca rival to La Liga title in the 2020/21 season with his 21 league goals. Now Lewandowski is being targeted for the same thing.

Lewandowski’s decision on choosing the next club is expected to come in April, reports the Spanish media. For Alexander Sørloth, a factor to take into consideration whether to stay, or change club.

If Lewandowski chooses to continue in La Liga for Atletico, it will not be to sit on the bench. We still think it would have been cool for Sørloth to be able to share a training field and match arena with the icon Lewandowski.
