Now I’m in the starting line-up and just scored. I’m very pleased. Madrid is my favourite city in Spain and it’s a pleasure to play for Atlético.”
Was it difficult to go from fighting for the Pichichi title to getting less playing time?
“It’s part of football. Here we have a different system than what I was used to at Villarreal, and with new teammates. It’s normal. Now I feel more comfortable. For a striker, goals are the most important thing – they give confidence, and now I have a lot of that.”
How have you handled going from the bench to the starting line-up?
“Being on the bench is the hardest thing in football. At the same time, it is difficult to score goals when you do not start. I’m happy with my performance, but all players want to start. Now I’m there, and I have to make the most of it.”
What do you think about the ups and downs of the season, including the loss after Julián Álvarez’s penalty?
“I don’t want to focus too much on that. The future is more important – we have five league games left and the Club World Cup, which is the most important thing for us now.”
How was the conversation with Simeone when he explained your role?
“It’s private between Diego and me (laughs). But it is important that coach and player understand each other. I know his ideas well, and we have a good relationship. He always communicates clearly, and that’s important.”
What is it like to compete for space with players like Griezmann?
“Antoine is a friend – a fantastic player who always shows up with a smile. It is a pleasure to work with him.”
How do you prepare for the Club World Championships?
“It’s a new and exciting tournament. After the league, we have a short break before we give everything to win on June 13.”
Can fans be satisfied with the season so far?
“We want to win titles. We’re not completely satisfied, but the Club World Cup gives us a chance to make amends – that has to be the focus now.”
What is it about Madrid that makes the city your favorite in Spain?
“It has everything – fantastic food, tranquility and good family life. I live a little outside the city center, and we all enjoy it here.”
You love food – what’s your biggest weakness apart from salmon?
“I love steak! And spines from San Sebastián (clay).”
What would you say to Atlético fans?

Can you confirm your future at the club?
“I want to play for Atlético de Madrid much, much more.”
There are strong rumours about Alex Baena – have you spoken to him?
“(Laughs) Rumours, just rumours! My only goal now is to finish the league strong and win the Club World Cup.”
An international match with Norway wouldn’t have been bad either, would it?
“Absolutely! We have a great opportunity against Italy in June. If we win it, the World Cup place is within reach.”
