Former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer believes that only three strikers in the Premier League can be described as “world class”. – Up from just two a few weeks ago.

Alan Shearer is still the all-time leading goalscorer even though it will soon be 19 years since he hung up his boots. In total, there were 260 goals in the Premier League for clubs such as Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle.

The former striker also scored 30 goals in 60 caps for England and won the Premier League once when he played for Blackburn.

Since retiring, Shearer has become a staple of a BBC’s football coverage.

On Saturday, Shearer talked about three Premier League attackers that he considers world-class when analysing former Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Southampton.

He said, “Shall we talk about (Alexander) Isaac? Yes, why not! Another fantastic achievement. All about his game… This is so smart.

“He’s in an offside position, but just watch his movement so he gets to the position where he can receive the pass. He is no longer offside. [Joe] Aribo goes up against him. He forces it, he makes the defender make a challenge, and it is without a doubt a punishment.”

Shearer continued: “I think there are three world-class strikers in the Premier League now.

“Haaland is one, Salah is another, and I think Isak has played his way into that company now.”

But an expert Danny Murphy said: “I actually think he has world-class ability, but to call him a world-class player… I think he has to do it longer.”

To which host and ex-player Gary Lineker agreed, he said, “I totally agree with that. I think he definitely has the abilities. There’s no doubt about it.”

After the win against Southampton, Magpies boss Eddie Howe was full of praise for Isak.

He said, “He’s been outstanding this year. Pretty much since day one, he’s been a regular goalscorer for us, and that’s definitely helped his confidence.

“His overall confidence when he comes onto the pitch seems very high at the moment and that’s not a given. You have to earn it through your training.”
