Not heard of Alvaro Arbeloa before this week? You’re not alone. The 42-year-old has worn both the Liverpool and Real Madrid shirts, but has stayed away from the spotlight since 2017. Since then, Arbeloa has spent his days coaching youth teams at Real Madrid. On Monday afternoon, he was called in for a little chat with the management. A few hours later, he was getting ready to lead one of the world’s biggest clubs – with some of the biggest stars on the planet.
On Monday, Xabi Alonso was done as Real Madrid coach, the Supercopa loss to arch-rivals Barcelona was the latest thing that pushed the former success coach at Bayer Leverkusen out the exit door.

We let Arbeloa tell us about a few hectic hours, on Tuesday the new Real Madrid coach had his first press conference.
-On Monday afternoon, I was told that the club and Xabi Alonso had mutually agreed to go their separate ways, and that they wanted me to take responsibility and lead the first team. A few minutes passed before the official announcement was sent out, Arbeloa tells the club’s website.
