When Andreas Georgson was tempted over to Manchester United last summer by then manager Erik ten Hag, he left behind a Lillestrøm team that looked okay, but completely lost momentum and was relegated to the OBOS League.

Manchester United’s latest backroom switch broke earlier this afternoon – with the exit of first-team coach Andreas Georgson now confirmed. According to journalist Laurie Whitwells, the 43-year-old Swede has left United after holding talks with both technical director Jason Wilcox and new manager Ruben Amorim.

Georgson, who was brought in last summer by Erik ten Hag and Wilcox, was primarily responsible for set-piece planning and individual player development. However, after discussions after the season’s tour in Malaysia and Hong Kong, it was agreed that there is now less room for these responsibilities under Amorim’s new coaching setup.

It is believed that Georgson’s role had become increasingly redundant. Especially with Amorim already having his own assistant, Carlos Fernandes, who is in charge of set pieces.

Georgson was retained after Ten Hag’s departure in October 2024.

However, the shift in tactical structure and reduced coaching overlap meant that there was clearly no place or defined role left for him going forward. This decision also seems to fall in line with broader cost-cutting measures at the club, as United try to avoid bloated coaching staff, backroom teams or squads of players under Amorim’s more streamlined vision.

Georgson, who previously worked with Wilcox at Southampton, is leaving after playing a part in United’s set-piece strategy during a miserable season. The former Arsenal and Brentford manager acknowledged the end of his chapter in Manchester with a heartfelt message, thanking Erik ten Hag, Jason Wilcox and Ruben Amorim for the opportunity.

“I’m leaving the club to find a new challenge somewhere else,” Georgson says on Manchester United’s website.

Andreas Georgson joined Manchester United from Norwegian side Lillestrøm in July 2024, where he was head coach.

Now the Premier League giant announces that the Swede is leaving the club.

“It’s been a fantastic experience and I will always be proud to have been part of such a fantastic club,” Georgson said on United’s website.

“This part of my career is now over, as I am leaving the club to find a new challenge elsewhere. While I’m excited about the opportunities ahead, I’m sad to have to leave so many great colleagues and friends at Carrington (the training ground) that makes United so special.

Georgson also has a long background from Malmö FF, where he has worked in the youth department, as an assistant coach for the men’s team, sports director and technical manager. He has previously held various roles at Brentford, Arsenal and Southampton.

Where Georgson will end up next is currently unclear.
