When Gabriel Jesus was carried off the pitch against Manchester United with injury, everyone knew that Arsenal are in trouble. The injuries have come in a row, but after the game, Arteta stated: “We are not close to anything (signing) and we are focusing on the players we have.” This was on Sunday. Two days later, the situation may have changed.
This summer, Liverpool worked intensely to sign a Spanish international who had just kissed the European Championship trophy, but the Premier League club was unable to persuade Martin Zubimendi to leave his Basque club.
Zubimendi rose through the ranks at Real Sociedad’s academy and has made 210 appearances since 2019. Over the past year, Premier League clubs have been queuing up to persuade what is described as one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders – to no avail. Now it is reported that Arsenal are in the process of getting the 25-year-old to get on the plane to London.
The Athletic reports Arsenal and Real Sociedad are in deep negotiations, the Daily Mail claims it is now just around the corner that Arsenal pay the €60 million buyout clause and can bring Zubimendi to the Emirates.
Manchester City have seen Zubimendi as the perfect Rodri replacement in recent months, but, like Liverpool, have not been able to persuade the 25-year-old. For Arsenal, this will be the really big signing that will make the crowd at Liverpool and Manchester City green with envy!
