According to The Athletic, Partey has signed a two-year contract with Villarreal. The transfer is free of charge, and the agreement includes an option that can be extended for another year. An official presentation is expected soon.
Sexual assault allegations
About a month ago, Partey was accused of five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault against three women in the period 2021–2022.
According to the Daily Mail, Partey’s lawyer has stated that the player denies the allegations and is looking forward to the possibility of “clearing his name”.
On Tuesday, Partey was granted conditional release during a court hearing in London, which allowed him to complete his transfer to Villarreal.
Supporter protests against the signing
From Villarreal supporters, there has been sharp criticism of the club for signing a player with such serious accusations hanging over him.
Cesar Pena, head of a Villarreal supporters’ group, told The Athletic:
“My personal opinion is the same as most fans express on social media: I do not accept that we bring in a player who is accused of such serious crimes. I want to fully understand if supporters boo him.”
Villarreal, who finished fifth in La Liga last season, have thus made a controversial decision that has already caused debate in the Spanish media and among football fans.
